Opening an FxPro account from South Africa
The application is short, but three choices inside it decide what your gold trading looks like months later, so settle them before you type anything.
The three decisions to settle before the form
Decide your account type, base currency and leverage before you open the form, because each one is harder to change after the account exists. Account types run Standard, Raw+, cTrader, Elite and VIP; Standard charges no commission on variable spreads, while Raw+ and cTrader pair raw spreads with a per-lot commission. Your base currency is the currency your balance, profit and loss are held in, and ZAR is available alongside USD, EUR and GBP. Leverage is offered up to 1:200 for retail and up to 1:500 for eligible or professional clients depending on instrument; that is a cap, not a setting to aim at.
On account type, the honest question is how you intend to trade gold rather than which label sounds better. If you will hold XAU/USD for hours and pay commission on each lot, the commission structure matters as much as the spread; if you trade rarely, a no-commission structure keeps the cost inside the spread. We cannot tell you which is cheaper for you, because that depends on your trade frequency and size, but our profit calculator lets you model both before you commit.
Base currency is the decision South African traders most often rush. A ZAR account means your rand funding is not converted on the way in, but gold is priced in USD, so every position still carries a USD exposure that shows up in your rand balance. A USD account converts your rand at funding instead. Either way a conversion happens somewhere; the question is whether you want it at deposit, at withdrawal, or running through your open positions.
What the form asks, in order
The form asks for your country of residence and contact details first, then your account type, base currency and leverage, then your financial circumstances and trading experience. Answer the residence question accurately, because it decides which entity onboards you; for South Africa the entity is FxPro Markets Direct Costa Rica Latam SRL, and an FxPro entity holds an FSCA licence locally (FSP no. 45052, issued 2015). The financial and experience questionnaire is not a formality: it sets the leverage you are offered, and it is the point where an overstated answer creates a mismatch later.
The questionnaire asks about income, savings, employment and prior trading. Answer it as your situation actually is. If your stated experience and income do not support the leverage you request, the offer comes back lower than the cap, and that is the system working rather than a fault. Trying to talk your way past it by inflating experience is the most common reason a South African applicant has to start over.
Expect identity verification to follow the application rather than sit inside it; the account opens, but deposits and trading stay limited until the check clears. Treat the application and the verification as one job and finish both before you fund anything.
Where our calculators come in before the first trade
Before you deposit, work out what leverage actually means for a gold position in rand terms. At 1:200, a 0.10-lot gold position (10 oz) needs about $85.50 margin; at the higher cap for eligible clients the margin requirement falls, but the exposure per rand of your balance rises with it. Run the margin calculator against your intended position size so the number is in front of you before the platform shows it.
Then run the pip value calculator on the same position. One pip on XAU/USD is 0.01, and one standard lot is 100 oz, so a 0.10-lot position moves a fixed dollar amount per pip that you can convert to rand at the prevailing rate. Knowing that figure tells you whether your stop distance and your account size are compatible, which is the question the form cannot answer for you.
Finally, check which entity your own account is opened with once the paperwork lands. FxPro is licensed by the FCA (UK) and CySEC, and an FxPro entity holds an FSCA licence in South Africa; check which entity your own account is opened with, because the protections attached to your account follow that entity and not the group name.
The country field selects the FxPro entity that holds your account and your money
The country field determines which legal entity your account is opened with, and that entity decides which regulator stands behind your money and which funding routes are available. For South African residents the serving entity is FxPro Markets Direct Costa Rica Latam SRL, while an FxPro entity holds an FSCA licence in South Africa. The caveat you must apply: FxPro is licensed by the FCA in the UK and CySEC, and an FxPro entity holds an FSCA licence in South Africa — check which entity your own account is opened with. The field is not a marketing preference; it is the anchor for the entire relationship.
Account type at opening decides platform access and the leverage tier you start on
The account type you pick at opening fixes two things you cannot easily undo: the platform set you can use and the leverage tier assigned to your account. FxPro offers MT4, MT5, cTrader and FxPro Edge; some account types map to specific platforms, so choosing one at the form stage narrows your later options. Leverage is capped at up to 1:200 for retail clients and up to 1:500 for eligible or professional clients depending on instrument. That is a cap, not a setting to aim at. Pick the account type that matches the platform you actually intend to trade on.
What you cannot change afterwards without a new account
Your country of residence and the legal entity it selects are fixed at opening; changing them later means opening a new account with the entity that serves your new country. The country field is the anchor for funding rails, regulator and leverage cap, so it is not an editable preference once the account is live. If you move to South Africa after opening elsewhere, you cannot simply switch the field; you open a fresh account with FxPro Markets Direct Costa Rica Latam SRL and fund it in rand through local cards, bank transfers or e-wallets. Plan the country field as permanent.
How long each step usually takes from form to first funded trade
The form itself takes about ten to fifteen minutes if you have your ID and proof of address ready, because the country field, account type and personal details are all on the same flow. Verification is the variable step: it usually completes within one business day when your documents are clear, but can stretch if the name or address does not match. Funding in ZAR by local card or bank transfer typically lands the same business day, while e-wallets can be faster. The total from starting the form to placing a first XAU/USD trade is usually one to two business days.
